Last weeks message looked into the subject of gods and idols. We discovered that, as Christians, we are monotheists: one-God people. Not just that we prioritize one god over others, but that, in fact, there is only one god: God. All other gods aren’t gods at all. They’re not real. We fabricate them, make them up. Disturbingly, we tend to orient our lives around these powerful figments of our imagination. Our choices are too often guided by them and we turn to them in crisis moments of discouragement, loneliness, insecurity, etc. It takes a healthy measure of humility to accept our frailty in this area, and to accept our natural tendency to leave God for another…many others, or to entertain many gods while asking God to be “the most important” among them. We need to engage our minds in this battle.
Romans 8:5 … those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
We need to turn on the lights and see what’s there. We need to search the cages of our zoo we create for ourselves.
- The cage of enticement. What are the primary enticements of your life? What captures your heart? What intrigues you? What pulls you to engage it? Why? What does it promise in return?
- The cage of fear. What are you afraid of? What keeps you up at night worrying? What anxiety eats away at you? Why? What do you fear is going to happen?
- The cage of trust. What brings you comfort? Soothes your worries and anxieties? Helps you escape the unwanted realities? Brings you a sense of confidence? Secures your place in society or your peace about the future? Does it really?
Thinking and pondering about such questions isn’t the solution, but it can lead us in the direction of the Solution. Unless we think about the nutty things we do to help ourselves cope, we never fully recognize the mess we’ve created. Until we acknowledge the mess, we’ll never know we need Help. We’re cornered by lions, and tigers and bears of our own creating, and we cannot escape on our own. The Ringmaster awaits your call. We’ll talk about him next…
