Each week Paul, our lead elder at Vista, encourages those who pray through the week’s prayer requests. Here’s what he shared this week…
Kelly [Paul’s wonderful wife] and I were watching an interesting DVD last night titled, “Expelled!” The producer, Ben Stein, explores the world of academia (among other things) and specifically looks at the entrenched views of evolution in the higher education system of our country and the career-threatening danger to those in that system who suggest that intelligent design may also be a legitimate theory to consider as well.
It made me think about the complexity of life; particularly the cell. You probably remember learning in science class how we evolved from a single-celled organism. It struck me how complex that single cell is. When Darwin proposed his theory, the understanding of the cell at that time was limited compared to today. As one segment suggested, if scientists of that era thought of the cell as complex as a ‘mud hut,’ today we see it as complex as a Saturn V rocket! I believe as scientists continue to ‘dig deeper’ and have more refined technology at their disposal to do so, they will find it is much more complex than a Saturn V rocket.
All of this to say that our Creator makes things that are far beyond our imagination. When He designed the first cell, He could foresee all the debates that man would engage in regarding whether that cell came about by accident or if Someone was behind it. I believe it takes more faith (than I have) to believe that something of this complexity came about by chance than it does to believe that there is One who meticulously created every detail of it. But, as the Scripture teaches, the beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord. When belief in God is thrown out the window, then all sorts of interesting ideas can arise that make little or no sense at all.
As you pray for this week’s requests, remember (for yourself and those you pray for) that each of us were, as the Psalmist declared, ‘Fearfully and wonderfully made.’ God put a lot of time and thought into each one of us and His love for us runs deep and wide. So pray with confidence that He hears and desires to answer our prayers – in His time and for His glory!
Love in Christ,
Paul
As Dr. Tackett aptly points out in “The Truth Project” the only way for anyone to make logical sense of the world around us is for there to be a logical, intellectual creator. If the creation is nothing more than a random accident of events, then there is no logical, rational basis upon which to form any theories regarding the origin of humankind or anything else. “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.'” Psalm 53:1
This is one of the first verses I ever recited to Henry. I pray that my little man knows this to be true at his very core – he is fearfully and wonderfully made!
