Simple Missional

Sunday morning @vistacommchurch continues the #kingdomDNA series, particularly what it means to be worshipful/missional. Apart from one unnecessary and somewhat irreverent (in my opinion) reference to Jesus as “JC,” Eddie Kaufholz (EK) makes an excellent point about being missional: our responsibility to compassionately offer whatever we have and trust God for the results…

I found this article to be helpful. There is some bad language in it but I think it’s an important perspective.

    http://www.newrepublic.com/article/120178/problem-international-development-and-plan-fix-it
” It’s not that development is broken, it’s that our expectations of it are.”

It’s also difficult to accept that we aren’t as powerful as we’d like to be. We’re humans in a broken world just like everyone else. Nothing is going to unbreak and uncurse this world until God chooses to do so. Chasing after the next big solution is actually a part of this brokenness and can often make things worse. I’d even propose that our savior complex is part of that brokenness. Who do we think we are exactly? Until Jesus comes back we have the difficult task of fighting against sin and brokenness to reconcile the world to God, all of its people and systems. We’re in a spiritual battle that we can’t even begin to fathom.

I also think that if we as individuals accepted our calling to be part of a larger body (the church), then we wouldn’t feel pressure to change the world on our own. We would still have responsibility for doing our own part, but look at the results of the whole, not our individual part.

This doesn’t paint a hopeless picture by any means. I believe having proper expectations for our work can set us free from the burden of saving the world, and free to love God and love our neighbor as God has called us to do.
