If you’re reading this Tuesday it’s the 6th day of the 40 Days preceding and in preparation for Easter…often called Lent…a time of deeper devotion, discipline, transformation. Not because of what we do…that is merely the pathway…because of a merciful God and his Spirit who changes the heart.
Among other disciplines, some of us are reading through one of 4 recommeded books…I’m keeping up here with Keller’s Prayer and Smith’s Good and Beautiful…slowly, only a chapter a week. This week: Chapters 1 of both books.
To me, Keller’s telling of Flannery O’Conner’s story reveals some basic things associated with prayer life…humility and honesty. Is that what you picked up? And I thought, wow, this ties in with last weeks message, Say It, out of 1 John 1 regarding confession…same requirements, really, don’t you think?!?
Good and Beautiful
Smith is distinguishing the pursuit of happiness (which is a worldy pursuit) from joy (a Godly provision). The first question was, “Which are we honesty setting out in pursuit of?” The next question…assuming of course our natural desire is for happiness…it seems, is, from what poor sources do we search to find happiness. (Smith suggests what we deeply know to be true…it’s a false pursuit…fleeting at best). In conjuction with Keller…we need some humble honesty about where we look for “happiness.”
How’s your week going with regard to your chosen discipline or moderation? Don’t beat yourself up if it’s gotten off to a slow start…do something today! And don’t slip into pride if it’s going well…thank God for his presence and provision.
If you haven’t joined in and would like to, maybe start here 40 Days.
