If you’ve been around Vista for a time, hopefully we’ve communicated our identity to you from a number of fronts. We are WORSHIPFUL, RELATIONAL, MISSIONAL. What exactly do those terms mean? Are they just the latest church buzz words? To us, they’re deeply personal and divinely-inspired; these principles are what we have built our church upon since our inception in 2007. Let me help you understand a bit better what these important principles mean, and encourage you to join with us as a people who are Worshipful, Relational, Missional…
…our practice and our definition of followers of Jesus.
That is, these are the things we understand God calling us to DO, but also who Jesus calls us to BE. So, we worship and strive to become more worshipful of heart; we relate by gathering regularly in small and large groups, and through these communities, we learn to relate more and more like Jesus exemplified; we do missions and we continue to become more missional in all that we think and do.
Worshipful: Knowing Jesus
Our alignment, orientation, posture to God, in Jesus
Worship begins with knowing Jesus – being reconciled to God in Christ and humbly realizing that it’s all about God rather than me. Once we rightly see God and rightly see ourselves, then we are worshipping God as He really is – Creator, Sustainer, Ruler… (Rom 3:21-28)
Relational: Following Jesus
Our alignment, orientation, posture to others according to Jesus
True relationship begins with an understanding of Jesus’ demands upon our lives with others. There IS a way Jesus calls us to live and it leads to heart change and unity, not just relational techniques. So we seek to relate to one another according to Jesus. (Matthew 5-7)
Missional: Being Jesus
Our alignment, orientation, posture to the unchurched for Jesus
As followers of Jesus, we are called to BE Jesus to the unchurched world. Our best evangelistic technique is to lean into worship and relationship…that is, to live with God at the center and Jesus as our example. As we become more honest with our own wrongful tendencies and continue to have our hearts changed, the world will notice – the world across the street AND across the sea. (Matthew 28:18–20)
How is God calling you to be more worshipful, relational and missional? Take a few minutes to meditate on the accompanying verses above.
